Pollye G. Bailey
I grew up in Mebane, North Carolina, and graduated from Graham Negro High School. Upon graduation, I pursued a degree in nursing at Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Through one of my patients, I met and married Beaufort Bailey. The patient happened to be his sister. From that union was born six children, L’Tanya Joy, Eugene, Jock, Joel, Jan and Jay. I later attended Winston-Salem State University, majoring in Early Childhood Education. Thus began a career teaching kindergarten for almost 30 years with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System.
Upon retirement from my teaching career, I devoted my time to many civic and community activities. I am a past president of Rho Zeta Chaper of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a Golden Life member of the NAACP, a Life Member of the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Retired School Personnel, a Life Member of the National Educators Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the Rural Initiative, Inc., a member of the National Trust for Historical Preservation, a member of the National Women of Achievement, and a member of the Wild Flower Red Hatters Society. In addition, I serve as a Lay Member and Chair of the Board of Elders of Saint Philips Moravian Church, am a life member of the World Missionary Society of the Moravian Southern Province.
My motto is, “The only faith that wears well and holds its color in all weather is that which is woven of conviction.” (G.K. Chesterton)
